Who We Are

The Canterfield concept was originally created back in the 1980's by Winston Porter. The idea was to create a social model senior housing community that would look and feel like a hotel- not at all like an 'old folks home.' The first Canterfield was built by father and son team Winston and Allen Porter in Atlanta in 2013. The team succeeded in its goal to use its respective strengths in senior healthcare and the hospitality and luxury housing industries to create a senior living continuum that offers unsurpassed services and amenities backed by quality care services. Canterfield is managed by Canterfield Management run by Winston and Allen Porter.

 
Medical Development Corporation

Medical Development Corporation (“MDC”) was the precursur to Canterfield. MDC specializes in the development and management of senior housing and healthcare products. The Atlanta-based company was established in 1990 and has been active in the long-term care and senior retirement housing sector for the last 28 years. Its founder and Principal, Winston A. Porter, MDC and its predecessor companies have developed close to 1700 senior residential, assisted living and nursing home units. Currently the company is affiliated, owns, and/or manages seven properties including Outpatient Rehabilitation Clinics in Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida, all of which MDC was primary in their acquisition and development.

Canterfield Management

Canterfield Management is a firm that specializes in managing senior living residences. The company provides management oversight for communities in and around the Southeast. Additionally, they provide receivership services for banks in need. They are proud to be involved with Canterfield and are dedicated to providing residents with a gracious lifestyle within a continuum of care.

Emily Simpson

Executive Director

Emily comes to Canterfield with a work background exclusively in Senior Living. She most recently served as an Assisted Living and Memory Care Director after having spent the first 8 years of her career as a Social Worker in Skilled Nursing Care. With this background, care and communication with families and residents remain top priority. It is her philosophy that the Leadership Team works side by side with care staff, and you will often find her assisting with a medication pass or leading an activity. Emily is a graduate of the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. She arrived in sunny Florida from Chicago in 2017 with her cat, Beatrice. After enduring 3 consecutive years of Polar Vortex weather in Chicago, it was time to make a change. Despite the early morning and late evenings that she works, Emily truly feels that living in Florida is a year-round vacation. She prides herself on her work, her ability to drink coffee at any hour of the day and her extensive shoe collection.

Donna Motschwiller

Business Office Manager

Donna Motschwiller relocated to Southwest Florida from New York in 2016. She earned her degree in Accounting from Hofstra University, but comes with a rich variety of experience. Donna has worked in business management, healthcare and in hospitality. This diverse background makes her an ideal Business Office Manager at Canterfield. While her education is in business, Donna is compassionate and is extremely personable with residents and their family members. She has 2 daughters of her own, Jillian and Remi who still live in New York City. Donna’s activities outside of work are just as wide-ranging as her professional skills. She enjoys biking, Pilates, cooking, gardening, and traveling whenever possible.

Pamela Wicks

Marketing Director

Pamela Wicks was born and raised in Massachusetts and moved to Florida in 2008 when where she fell in love with the Senior Living Industry. Pamela is highly skilled in senior living sales, a true industry expert with a passion to serve. She treats every resident and family as if they were her own family, helping them every step of the way! Pamela attended Salem State University and has always held a strong passion for hospitality. In her free time, Pamela enjoys spending time with her husband, two stepchildren and family. Pamela exemplifies top notch hospitality and always insists on putting residents first! Pamela lives by the saying “people will forget what you say or did, but not how you made them feel.”

 

Luz Hendricks

Wellness Director

Luz Hendricks grew up in Southwest Florida and became an LPN in 2011. She joined the Canterfield team in March of 2021 and has caught her stride quickly. She has worked in Senior care from the very start of her nursing career – ranging from Skilled Nursing to Assisted Living and Memory Care. Luz’s passion is serving those with memory care needs and is continuously looking for opportunities in education on Dementia/Alzheimer’s Disease. She may be soft-spoken in voice but will always advocate for the best services and treatments for the residents. An ideal Saturday morning off for her would be an early sunrise on the beach, followed by a good cup of strong coffee, some time with her daughter Jaylu, and a little bit of Amazon shopping to round out the morning.

Aaron Burger

Director of Maintenance

Aaron Burger is a transplant from Tennessee who moved for the Florida sunshine. He received his degree in Fire Science Technology and served as a Firefighter for many years. Simultaneously to his fire career, he began working in the Maintenance department at a local Assisted Living facility where he served for 15 years. Aaron is handyman extraordinaire – but more importantly, he maintains compliance with all Hurricane Preparations, Fire Safety Codes & partners with companies that ensure that Canterfield’s aesthetics and cleanliness are held to a high standard. Aaron and his wife relocated to Florida in 2020 and he spends his free time enjoying the beach. All the vitamin D must serve him well because Aaron always has a smile on his face and a “can do” attitude.

Joel Santiago

Executive Chef

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Joel grew up in San Juan working at his fathers restaurant where his love and passion for food was born. He moved to Florida in 2001 to attend Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts where he graduated in 2004 with an associates degree in culinary arts. After working in various restaurants over the years, including as a chef for the Dallas Cowboys, Joel turned his passion for food towards senior living after caring for his father during his last years. He has 20 plus years in Hotels and Senior Living Communities and loves being able to interact with guests on a daily basis. In Joel’s free time he loves spending time with his wife, Charysse and their daughter, Brynlie.
